GAH!
I'm watching the vice guide to travel: Liberia. It's a documentary basically about war in Liberia. Its so terrifying but SO great. These men went to Liberia to interview war lords and see the worst parts of Liberia. Here are some facts from the movie:
-4th poorest country in the world
-70% of women have been raped
-80% of the population is unemployed
- used to be called "small america"
This kind of thing makes me so sad. When I was in Ghana we often talked about war in African countries. A girl from my trip, Caroline, is from Nigera but went to school at Ryerson (she's now transferred to med school in Ghana...) and she said it best. She just said that it's possible to fix these countries that are almost ruined by war and poverty. Look at Ghana right now, it's politically stable, safe not too high levels of HIV. Its really turning itself around and a lot of it has to do with the politics. These countries ar so politically unstable and even if the elect someone who has the ability to turn things around, if the ex war lords don't like him they can just kill him. Its too corrupt. These people in power run everything and until that changes, I don't think its possible to fix anything.
sorry this kinda doesnt make sense because im wtaching a bit while writing
So, apparently the UN is supposed to leave Liberia in a year and when that happens the Liberians say that war will break out. They have their armies and weapons ready. If this is the case, why are people not more aware of this and trying to do things? Scaryyyy
